Lands' End Canvas

Land's End just launched a new brand called Lands' End Canvas 1963.  It has a younger hipper vibe a la J. Crew and Madewell, and a bit of the preppy flair of Polo and Kate Spade.  Yet it still has Lands' End's roots in solid classic staples.  I think maybe they're on to something?

Welcome Home!

Our real estate agent Charlie Clark, did a great job listening to what we wanted in a house and finding us our wonderful Eagle Rock chalet. We adore our location and are trying to convince all our friends to move to our area. And we think we've found the perfect little place for those of you who want to join us in our little slice of LA. 

It's a 1700 square foot newly renovated bungalow, priced to sell at $499,000.  The owners did a great job with the finish seletions, creating a light, airy and inviting space.

The landscaping look great as well and the native plantings should keep those water bills down!

So another former roommate, this one in New York, just bought a new condo and I'm helping her with some furniture selections.  I asked her to describe her taste, and along with some key designers like Calvin Klein, who she loves, she also sent me a list of her dislikes.  In particular, and in her own words, she expressed the following: I can't stand "styling like what this store has. this page is particularly offensive, but the whole site makes me ill".  

First off, telling someone what you don't like is a great way to help them get a better idea of your taste.

Secondly, I completely concur. Now furnishings has a wide array of "contemporary" furniture that seems to hearken back to the early 90's.... not so now. 

A word to the wise, if you're going modern, stick to places like Room & Board and Design Within Reach or their more affordable cousins CB2 and West Elm.  Some examples of better options:

Pouf-tastic

Poufs are a great versatile way to add seating to a space. Place them in front of a fireplace, adjacent to a coffee table, under a window.  They're great for areas that need circulation but where extra seating might be beneficial. Here's a roundup of some favorites:

Northwest Rescue

My freshman year college roommate Denise recently moved from the Windy City to the Pacific Northwest along with her husband and two adorable children.   They bought a new house, and as is typical, they are now struggling to make their existing furniture work in the space.  I offered to do a little design consultation for her from afar to help her out with the room. Here is what her family room / kitchen looks like now:

Sunday night was a mini design charette for me and I came up with two layouts.

And three schemes using their existing brown leather sofa. The second sofa will be moved to another room.  I suggested adding a new chair so that not everything is so matchy. And a touch of white ties into the kitchen cabinets and freshens up the look.

Estate Sale Finds

Frederick Cooper Pharmacy lamp for the living room $25.  We had been looking for one of these and I wanted a antique brass coloration to tie in to some of the other elements in the living room.  The pricing was way better than the new ones which were priced at a couple hundred bucks each.  Now we can lay on the living room sofa and read a book without going blind.  A pharmacy lamp is a great option here since we didn't want anything to compete with the two statement table lamps behind.

 Large Bird Cage $25.  I'm not sure yet what I'm going to do with this. I may spray paint it a fun color.  It might look nice with some plants inside or a series of candles.  In the meantime it's welcoming visitors on the front stoop (oh and look, there's the remaining white pumpkin the squirrel didn't eat!).

Bamboo and cane chair $25.  Currently adorning the guest room.  It ties in nicely with the bamboo style frames on the artwork.  I'm not sure if I'll leave it in its natural state or paint it.  There was a bench of similar style that I was tempted to purchase and resell but I couldn't find a home for it in the meantime.
