10 Things: Heather Kilmer-Cruzate

Hi Everyone. We're back with another 10 things.  You've heard from me (Jess Davis), Jess Burne, Elizabeth Boland, and Sharon Michaels.  Heather is the newest member of our team.  She oversees Nest Studio’s social media efforts as well as helping Jess with her design projects and other marketing efforts.  Heather grew up on her family’s apple and peach orchard in the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia where she developed a love for animals and the outdoors.  After completing her professional degree in architecture, Heather worked as a designer for Jeanne Gang in Chicago and a project architect for Diana Balmori in New York.  She left her career as an architect 5 years ago to stay home full time with her son and Basenji pup, Jingle. Thrilled to join the group of impressive women and moms who work at Nest Studio last January, Heather loves researching Design Crush Blog Posts and inspirational images for the @neststudiohardware Instragram feed

Here is a list of 10 things that make Heather’s life richer and simpler.

Coconut oil:  From culinary uses to a cooling moisturizing regime, I would be hard pressed to find something Coconut Oil can't improve.

The sound of my son laughing ... I just melt.

Oliver People's sunglasses: everything looks better through persimmon colored lenses.

This American Life:  Ira Glass is one of the best modern day storytellers.

Fresh mint, basil and thyme from my summer herb garden. 

My mischievous basenji pup:  she's the best listener, never tells my secrets and keeps me toasty at night ... what more could I want?

Sorel insulated and waterproof slimpack riding tall duck boot:  this boot has kept my feet warm and dry for years.

Rodan + Fields Eyelash Boost: I've not so secretly been envying my sons lusciously long eyelashes for years.  This eyelash boost serum actually produces results.

Yuka, my hair stylist:  from weddings to babies to moving to the burbs, this is one of my longest relationships. 

Pink Lady Apples:  my mom started growing pink ladies in her orchard a few decades ago.  Their crunchy goodness reminds me of home.

Urban Farmhouse Reveal: The Powder Room

Hi Everyone!  Just a couple more spaces to go on our Urban Farmhouse Reveal. One of my favorite spaces is the powder room. It's such a little jewel box. Love the floor tile, the stone sink, shiplap and pendant light.  Here is a refresher with the design concept.

And here is the final product.  I absolutely love the vintage french mirror that we got at Nickey Kehoe.  Wish that the space was a little larger so we could have gotten some better shots. But hopefully you get the idea.

Katharine Pooley: Design Crush

London based interior designer, Katharine Pooley, is the focus of this week's Design Crush.  This global interior design powerhouse creates classical and contemporary interiors for the British elite and international royalty.  As an avid traveler, Pooley draws inspiration from her international experiences and creates spaces with an informed, unique and timeless beauty.

Katharine Pooley's work is characterized by an ethos of simplicity, outstanding attending to craft, and a global sensibility.  What strikes me most about her interiors are the stunning focal points and sight lines.  Her interiors are curated with a eye-catching central point such as a piece of artwork, lighting fixture or bespoke detail that anchors the entire space.  The result is a cohesive and seamless sense of luxury.

Urban Farmhouse Reveal: The Kids' Bathroom

Hi Everyone. Jess Davis back again with one of the final spaces in our Urban Farmhouse project. So far we've shown you the Kitchen, Living / Dining, Master Bedroom, Master Bath, Play Room, Boy's Room, and Guest Room.  Today we have the Kid's Bath.  You recall my design concept from a while back. Here is a refresher.

And here is the final product. I love how the industrial lights tie in with the farmhouse theme and how clean and bright the space is.

Chic Airy Patio

As you likely already know, designer Erin Fetherston has impeccable taste as is evidenced by her home that has gone viral after being posted here, here and here (among others) as of late. I'm especially drawn to her outdoor space, a chic airy pergola-covered patio. I'm getting major Mediterranean vibes from this image of it shared by Sarah Sherman Samuel and although this look may seem too dreamy to bring to life, with just a few accents a reminiscent look could actually be achieved. You could source some decorative accessories and maybe even this amazing rustic Protected Teak Country Dining Table from one of my all time favorites Terrain. Read on for some additional ideas to channel this relaxed entertainment-worthy look in your own space, pergola or not.

Urban Farmhouse Reveal: The Guest Room

Hi Everyone.  Jess Davis back again with a few final spaces in our Urban Farmhouse project.  Thus far you've seen the Kitchen, Living / Dining, Master Bedroom, Master Bath, Play Room, and Boy's room.  Today we are hitting up the Guest Room.  Perhaps a little less interesting but still a fun space.  Here was the design board we created.

And here is the final product. Light, airy and neutral. My client found that vintage modigiliani print and I love how it adds so much presence in the room.

Design Crush: Steven Gambrel

My feelings about Steven Gambrel's work can be best compared to that of an unrequited high school crush.  Every time I see a S. R. Gambrel interior I swoon and am left speechless;  his bold and confident work never disappoints!

Gambrel is classic yet modern, familiar yet unexpected, but always with a nod to the vernacular.  No matter if it's an urban penthouse, a country estate or a beach retreat, his highly customized interiors and architectural detailing are inspired by the region of that particular commission.  He clearly takes a multidisciplinary approach to design focusing on traditional detailing such as carefully proportioned millwork, bespoke hardware, authentic finishes, and a surprising use of richly saturated color to contrast with muted palettes.  The work is unquestionably timeless, comfortable, and it improves with age.

Customized and unique elements are a key component to Gambrel's aesthetic.  S.R. Gambrel has long designed custom furniture for clients, but Gambrel recently started several retail product lines:  Grove Brickworks glazed bricks with Waterworks, table accessories for the Lacquer Company,  handmade light fixtures for Urban Electric Company, and custom furniture though Dering Hall.

Urban Farmhouse Reveal: Baby Boy's Room

Hi Everyone.  Jess Davis here. Last week was crazy so I didn't get a chance to show you a new space in our Urban Farmhouse project. Thus far you've seen the kitchen, living / dining, master bedroom, master bath, and play room.  Next up is my client's son's room. I love that this room is playful yet masculine and not too baby-ish.  It's a nursery but it will grow with him to be his big-boy room. Here is our design board:

And the after photos. I love it when the concept board is so true to the final product.  What do you think?
