CURATED NEST: Lighting Love

Wednesday, December 23, 2015

We all know Jessica has just moved into a new/old house, which means lots of designing and searching for the right products to make this new place fee like home.

One of her most difficult selections is going to be her kitchen lighting.... For an old home like hers, the best way to keep it current is by selecting traditional designs with new form, like lantern pendants.

If you're looking for the same thing, keep an eye on Jessica's Pinterest for some great ideas like this selection above.

Lamps on Chairish

Friday, September 6, 2013

Do you remember these awesome orange lamps that I had in our LA living room?
I got them at an antiques mall in LA and had new shades made for them.  They really worked well in the scale of our space at the time.

However, there just isn't a space for them in our house here. I'd tried selling them on Craiglist but they are so specific and also a bit nicer than your typical Craiglist find (as in more expensive) that nothing really happened. Then I stumbled across Chairish on Little Green Notebook.  It's such a great source - somewhere between Craigslist and V and M and 1st Dibs.  I decided to list my lamps there. You can see the listing here. Crossing my fingers that I get some bites. Also excited to have a new source for vintage finds for client projects!

The Master Bedroom - swing arm sconces

Monday, March 18, 2013

Remember back when I was brainstorming all these color schemes for our master bedroom?  Well, I changed my mind yet again. To jog your memory, here is what the room looked like most recently.

I was at Calico Corners and found this awesome black and white diamond fabric and thought it would look great as draperies in our bedroom.  This meant that the original beni ourain rug concept was out (since that's just too much black on white diamond action).  So, in rethinking the room I decided to go with some sort of oriental rug (currently I have a West Elm overdyed rug as a stand in on my concept board even though it's more red than I'd like).  I also added in some of the bedding and pillows that I recently purchased at Target to make the board more true to life and coherent.  And I put in some Pottery Barn nightstands that I think are lighter and let my chinoiserie art show through (although Scott doesn't like them from a practical storage standpoint).

The Restoration Hardware swing-arm sconces were on sale recently so I decided to purchase them and pay for them by selling my original ceramic lamps. Luckily I have a taker.  I'm excited to get that one done and in place.

I'm still not totally convinced about the scheme although it's starting to come together.  I think what is throwing me off is the wall color. I t's too green.  So the question is do I design around the wall color or just have it repainted at some point down the line so that I can better wrap my head around the whole thing. What do you guys think?  I'm sort of wanting a white room somewhere in the house? Or maybe making it more of a true grey - like a dark charcoal?

The Dining Room Chandelier

Monday, January 21, 2013

One of my favorite finds recently has been our dining room chandelier. It's from Jonathan Adler and is one that I'd been eyeing for a while and had pinned to our house pinboard.  Well, I'm on this great mom's email list in our town and people are always selling stuff, giving stuff away and offering valuable information up.  Someone had bought this chandelier for her living room but it turned out to be too big and she was selling it new for a deep discount.  I snatched it up and it looks fabulous in the room. The dining table is also a freebie from my mom's list and I plan to paint it a sort of minty celadon color so there is less heavy wood in the room.  It has two leaves so is great for entertaining.  Also planning to get a fiddle leaf fig for the right hand corner and maybe a brass or lucite bar cart for the left.  Here it is from a couple of angles.  Don't you love my new accessorizing?  Baby wipes, sippy cup, gold fish crackers, high chair (as I said in a previous post, if I waited to stage the space, this post would never happen).

And a view from the kitchen (pre-glaze and stencil):

A fun addition to a room. Reminds me a lot of the Novogratzs and their love of light boxes and letters.

Urban Outfitters Marquee Alphabet Light.

Speaking of Urban - they have some great bedding and drapery right now. For the prices of their duvet sets, you could buy them and reconstruct them into pillow shams, upholstery for benches and dining chairs etc.  Options abound for repurposing with the prices so low.

I discovered Currey & Company at the HD show in Vegas.  They have some great stuff, which in many ways is geared toward the residential market.  A bit on the traditional side but pared down and fresh with some great finishes. Sort of reminds me of Julie's style from Milk & Honey Home.  Here are some of my faves:
figure 1: Sahara Pendant
figure 2: Isis Table Lamp
figure 3: Loggia Lantern
figure 4: Sethos Chandelier
figure 5: Metamorphosis Table Lamp
figure 6: Axel Orb Chandelier
figure 7: Starburst Wall Sconce

Last weekend we stopped in at World Market on our way to the hardware store. As usual, they had some great finds. I had been searching for some sort of light fixture for our powder room - the old ugly one was discarded when Scott's parents painted the room. I wanted something more pendant-like (versus a flush mount) but that didn't hang too low. Also, it had to illuminate the room sufficiently. So many of the items I found were perforated metal or colored glass and just made the room too dim. The $39 Harriet Glass Lamp has that old school industrial vibe I was looking for and with the glass shade (and exposed filament bulb) it had the right amount of illumination. AND most certainly the right price.  Now, I have to caveat this by saying that California has some new laws that are slightly ridiculous. The pendant came with a fluorescent bulb.  Can you imagine this pendant with a CFL in it?  Not so much.  I'm all about saving energy, but when it makes sense.
I am proud to say that I wired and installed the whole thing myself (including reducing the length of the cord and stripping the wiring and wiring the ground) while the hubby was out getting his hair cut.
Still gotta add some artwork and maybe a sink / vanity skirt to the powder room, but it's shaping up nicely.

One of my favorite to-the-trade sources Arteriors has come out with some great new stuff recently. I'm really digging their new lighting collection, much of which is by Laura Kirar.  She has such a great eye - modern yet classic with a funky twist.  Wishing I had a bigger house purely for the opportunity for more lamps, pendants and sconces!
