STYLIN' MAMMA

I am trying (and failing) to temper my glee about some upcoming work travel.  You see, I used to travel for work ALL THE TIME.  And not just travel: international travel.  Executive Mileage Plus Platinum membership travel.  It was grueling and sometimes lonely and involved a lot of late-night hotel VH1 marathons and room service.  At the time I couldn't wait to get home.  Ah, the old days.

Since having the kidlets I am lucky to see the inside of an airplane twice in a year, and usually this is the happy consequence of someone I love tying the knot. Don't get me wrong: we travel as a family all the time (roadtrippin' is our game!) but it's almost always the four of us and inevitably involves me throwing snacks into the backseat of the car on the highway.

SO.  This four-day work trip on the horizon represents the second time in six years that I have boarded a plane and gone somewhere alone, with only some magazines, my ambition, and a suitcase full of fabulous clothes to keep me company.  I'm a teeny bit stoked.  There are daytime meetings and nighttime engagements, so needless to say, I need to shop.  

For day, a few items that say "I'm creative but still reliable!": a packable dress (that begs for a necklace), a pair of slightly edgy pants, a simple funnel-neck sweater, heels that mean it (but can still handle an airport), and a roomy bag for computer and whatnot.  

For night, a dress and some utterly impractical shoes, thank you very much, with earrings that might otherwise get pulled off by tiny reaching hands.  

Now hand me that weekender.  It's time to get packing.

Stylin' Mamma: Beating Blues with Blues

Sometimes you reach a point when you are just DONE.  

This morning, after a fabulous dinner party with old friends and with three days to go until our official summer vacation, all four of the people in our family woke up DONE.  DONE with work, DONE with camp, DONE with the muggy, foggy weather, DONE with the 5:30am gym routine and the lunch boxes and the rushing everybody through brushing their teeth and putting on shoes.  

It's time to go.  But we have three days to fight through.  So we moped through breakfast and I dropped off the kiddos, glum faces staring up at me, and then raced home to get dressed for work.  It's summer casual in the office and I found myself reaching, as I always do, for denim.  Beat the blues with blues, I say.  Beat the blues with blues. (And neutral shoes.)

Stylin' Mamma: Spring Breakers Triple-Play

My husband and are going on vacation!  Just the two of us, for two nights, traveling on an airplane.  I am delirious with excitement.  After years of packing up the car with toys, food, pack n play, Bumbo chair, DVDs...I just can't express in words how thrilling it sounds to pack a carry-on and GO.

What to put in said carry-on?  That is the question.  And though I have a closet full of options I can't help thinking that for my first vacation sans children in nearly three years, I should splurge on a little something.  Right?

Methinks these cargoes will do the job nicely.

Taking in a baseball game on a balmy Friday night calls for a casual textured sweater and a lightweight scarf for flair.

The pants do double-duty on Saturday for shopping and brewery-hopping with flat sandals, a roomy cross-body, simple lace blouse, and filagree earrings.

Finally, Saturday night on the town is a no-brainer when you change into a d'Orsay heel, add a blingy necklace and show a hint of shoulder.

A curling iron and some lipstick and I'm ready to fly.

City, and it has me dreaming about a long weekend getaway to New England. I’ve
always wanted to do a trip to take in the fall foliage, but have yet to do so. Admiring the
gorgeous autumn trees (my digital SLR would definitely make the trip with me), hiking
some mountain trails, sitting by a cozy fire, and digging into a pile of New Yorkers
sounds like a perfect few days.

Today, we have Halle here doing a little wanderlust guest post.  Take it away Halle:

Hi everyone! I'm Halle from Delicious Duds, and I'm so excited to guest post for Jess while she's busy with her move. We bonded a few weeks ago over our shared summer wanderlust, so today I've decided to share another dream destination that's on my list: Newport, Rhode Island. Where would I stay on this dream trip? The wonderfully picturesque Chanler at Cliff Walk. 

Can you imagine waking up to those gorgeous views? During my stay, I would probably be content to laze around the property and dine at one of the five restaurants on site {namely, the Cliff Walk Terrace or Spiced Pear}. Although, I don't think I could pass up wandering down to beautiful Easton Beach - where you can grab the most delicious looking lobster roll at the...snack bar? Fancy!

Laidback, preppy style is a must on the East Coast. Personally, I love to add colorful, funky accessories to an otherwise traditionally preppy piece {in this case, a striped linen dress} for a little more character.

New York in Instagrams

I apologize for the blog post dry spell.  With the last week of work and then a week and a half in New York, there just wasn't time to get posts scheduled for each day I was away - and I didn't want to attempt to do any posting from my iphone - scary.  I'm hoping to do better when we make the actual move now that I have a little more time on my hands to get stuff done in advance.

Whew.  New York still lives up to its reputation.  I am beat.  Some whirlwind house hunting in Jersey.  Lunches with friends in the city.  Lugging a 20 lb porker and his accompanying gear and stroller up and down subway stairs.  Braving the rain without one of those stroller covers (what's that? we don't use those in socal - plastic bag to the rescue!).  Coming down with the stomach flu at my first visit to Scott's new office.  Needless to say, I'm happy to be home and hoping to get a little rest in before I start all the packing and moving craziness.  In the meantime here are some pics from our time in New York.  Admittedly, I didn't really find much time to take photographs except for of Bryan.  But you can see the amazing view of Manhattan from our summer sublet balcony (lucky for you, you can't smell the recycling facility just down the hill).  Hope everyone is having a great week so far!

I have to say I'm not a fan of just cutting and pasting images from someone else to create a blog post. I like to curate or create my own content most of the time. However, these photos of the new W Koh Samui have been circulating around the interwebs and giving me a serious case of wanderlust. They were too incredible not to share.

Palm Springs

We just returned from a relaxing week in Palm Springs with the fam.  Despite traveling with a 2 month old, we managed to enjoy a lot of what the town had to offer from lunch at Cheeky's, perusing the Palm Canyon Antiques shops (my favorite find being Swank on the South end of the Palm Canyon drag), and hiking the mountainside trails, to drinks at the Parker and dinner at the Purple Palm.  I'm in love with the quintessential mid-century modern architecture that abounds and that makes such a nice counterpoint to the desert scenery.  Can't wait to go back when Bryan is old enough to swim and we can really do some in-depth antiquing.

Guest Post: East Coast, West Coast - Part 1: The Rug

Thanks to my Boston buddy Michele of The Department of the Interior for her guest post today: 

As if I didn't already have enough friends who have migrated West, (ahem, Jess), my friend Jay recently ditched me and all of his friends on the East Coast for an opportunity to shack up in San Francisco. I don't really know why he'd ever want to leave Boston but he did. Now he's all complaining that his apartment isn't "done".  It's only been a month, be patient I tell him, but he's still anxious and ridiculously motivated. So I've been trying to help him select a few pieces of furniture for his smallish but very cutish one bedroom apartment. Which, by the way, is located across the street from Golden Gate Park, which I see is very nice from the photos he keeps sending me.

Since I'm still East Coast, we've been communicating via facetime, ivideo, email and texting. One afternoon he went on a rug searching bender.

The rug I really wanted him to get is this Ikea Stockholm Rand rug $199.00, but apparently they are sold out at every store in the country. He told me there was someone selling it on ebay for twice the retail amount. What's up with that?

So he finally settled on this shaggy Memphis Stone rug from Crate and Barrel. There's no wool in it so his feet won't get itchy.

My challenge for the living room now is to convince him that he needs a fabulous coffee table in a very bright color.  Like this one made from the hood of a Camaro.

Follow the Woody

On various road trips and camping excursions I've often found myself cringing at the monstrosities that are American camper vans cruising down the road and dominating natural campsites.  My midwestern born and bred husband, on the other hand, touts the endless advantages to cross crountry road-tripping in said homes-on-wheels  So one day, perhaps in retirement, I imagine I will have to succumb to the idea of the open road with a bobble head hula dancer on the dash board and a pair of fuzzy dice hanging from the rear-view-mirror. I'm hoping though, that at that point, we will have the lifestyle such that we can afford an Airstream or some other stylish version of the camper / trailer.

To add to my road-trip inspiration, Moore and Giles Leather recently introduced their Woody Wagon at the New York's Dining By Design. The Woody will be traveling across country (and hopefully stopping near you) this summer. I love how everything expands and how it stores so much. It's like a great chest of drawers, jewelry box or pair of pocketed cargo pants.  I know, it's a bit ridiculous that recreation of the alcoholic variety is given such an inordinate amount of space.  For true traveling you might need to do a little restructuring. But still, there is no doubt that with the Woody one is cruising in style - a bit of a nod to old school Martha's Vinyard nautical style perhaps.
